5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course in Brooklyn: Online Class, MV-278 Certificate and Next Steps
The 5-hour pre-licensing course is a required stop on the way to a New York driver's license. You cannot book your road test without it. If you live in Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Sunset Park or anywhere else in Brooklyn, this guide walks you through everything you need: who has to take the course, how the online class works, what the certificate means, and how to plan your next steps.
Do I really have to take it?
If you are getting your first New York driver's license, almost certainly yes. The requirement applies to:
- Teenagers with a junior learner permit
- Adults of any age applying for a first license
- Drivers licensed abroad who cannot exchange their foreign license and must take the road test
The main exception is a student who completed an approved driver education course and received the MV-285 certificate. That certificate replaces the 5-hour course.
How the online class works
New York allows approved driving schools to teach the 5-hour course online with a live instructor, and that is how Lama Driving School currently runs it. Here is what to expect:
- Book your seat. Call us or book online. Have your learner permit ready, because the permit number goes on your certificate.
- Receive your link. We email or text you the class link before the session.
- Join on time, on camera. You need a device with a working camera and microphone and a stable internet connection. Attendance is checked, and you must take part for the full five hours to receive credit.
- Get your certificate. After the course, your MV-278 is issued and recorded so you can book your road test.
Plan to take the class from a quiet place. Joining from a moving car or a noisy café can lead to problems with attendance verification.
What you will learn
The course is about judgment and awareness, not car control. Topics follow the New York State curriculum and include:
- Seeing hazards early: scanning the road, predicting what others will do and managing space around your car
- Human factors: fatigue, emotions, distraction and peer pressure
- Alcohol and drugs: how they affect driving, and New York's penalties, including zero tolerance for drivers under 21
- Sharing the road: pedestrians, cyclists, buses, trucks and emergency vehicles
- Defensive driving: following distance, intersections and right of way
Our instructors connect these lessons to real Brooklyn situations: buses pulling away from stops on 86th Street, cyclists in bike lanes, and drivers running yellow lights on 4th Avenue.
The MV-278 certificate: the details that matter
- Valid for one year. If you do not pass your road test within a year of finishing the course, you will need to take it again. Do not take the course too early if your road test is still far off.
- Check your details. Your name and permit number must be correct, or you may not be able to book a road test.
- Lost it? The school that issued it can provide a duplicate.
Getting the most out of the class
Five hours is a long time on a screen, so set yourself up to stay focused. Charge your device and keep the charger nearby, close other apps and notifications, and keep your permit within reach in case the instructor needs to check it. Have a notebook ready: the following-distance rules, the alcohol limits and the right-of-way situations discussed in class come up again on the road and in everyday driving. If you are a parent booking for a teen, make sure they have a quiet room for the whole session.
Cost at Lama Driving School

After the course: your path to the road test
Once you have your MV-278, your path looks like this:
- Practice driving. Combine professional lessons with supervised practice. Drivers under 18 must log at least 50 hours, certified on form MV-262.
- Master the maneuvers. Parallel parking and three-point turns cause the most trouble. Read our NYC parking and three-point turn guide.
- Book your road test on the DMV website.
- Prepare for Brooklyn traffic. Our Brooklyn road test guide explains what examiners look for.
